Morning high blood sugar can happen because of the dawn phenomenon, evening food patterns, overnight treatment gaps, or rebound patterns after lows. Patients often assume one explanation, but morning highs usually need more context before the cause is clear.
Common Reasons for Morning Highs
- Dawn phenomenon
- Late-night food or snacks
- Medication wearing off too soon
- Overnight lows followed by rebound
Why Overnight Data Helps
Without CGM or extra overnight checks, morning glucose only shows the end result. It does not show whether glucose rose gradually, spiked before waking, or dropped and rebounded. That is why pattern review is often more valuable than reacting to one fasting number alone.
